Kayaking sessions are available to Girlguiding groups and non-member groups. There are 24 spaces available, spread over two back-to-back 45-minute sessions of 12 participants, either side of the high tide. Anyone aged 7+ can take part in kayaking. The kayaking ratio is 1 instructor to 8 participants, with a minimum of two adults present. There will be two instructors on the water during sessions. Adults may take part, provided they are included in the participant numbers and that appropriate supervision is in place for anyone waiting on land. For water activities, confidence in the water is more important than the ability to swim a specific distance. Leaders must check swimming ability and water confidence and inform the instructor of any concerns. Where participants have low water confidence, this should be included in the risk assessment and supervision ratios may need to be amended. If anyone needs to be assisted back into a kayak by the instructor, they should have the confidence to remain in the water until rescued. No previous kayaking experience is required. Sessions are suitable for beginners and are led by qualified instructors who will provide guidance and support throughout. All participants must be able to help move the kayaks from the campsite to the water and back. Ruk Trolleys are available for transporting the blue kayaks.

There are 12 sit-on-top kayaks available: • 10 blue Palm Islander kayaks • 2 orange Aqua Leo kayaks The blue kayaks are supplied with paddles and backrests, and Ruk Trolleys are available to help transport them to the creek. A full list of equipment can be viewed here:

All kayaking equipment is provided, including kayaks, paddles and buoyancy aids. All participants must be ready in appropriate clothing and have a buoyancy aid fitted by the agreed start time. Recommended clothing includes: • Swimsuit or wetsuit • Spray top • Wet shoes Alternatively, tracksuit bottoms, a synthetic fleece top and an old cagoule are suitable. Shoes should be old, secure on the foot and suitable for getting muddy. Clothing made from natural fibres, such as wool, should be avoided. A plastic bag for wet and muddy clothes is recommended. Glasses retainers and waterproof phone cases are available to borrow, but personal items are brought at the owner’s risk.

You will need to access the kayak store. The key is kept in the Condo room, and you will need the door code to enter (this should be provided in advance). The kayak adviser holds a spare key if needed. The code for the kayak padlock will be emailed to you before your session. Please ensure you have this available to unlock the kayaks on arrival and lock them again at the end of the session. The instructor will meet leaders and participants at the campsite, check equipment and help fit buoyancy aids before heading to the water.

At the end of the session, all kayaks and equipment must be returned to the campsite by participants and rinsed thoroughly with fresh water to remove mud and salt. Once rinsed: • Kayaks should be returned to their original locations and secured with the padlock. • Buoyancy aids should be rinsed, zipped and clipped, then hung up in the kayak store to dry. • Paddles should be rinsed and returned to the kayak store.
