Girlguiding Cornwall has been assisting the Royal Cornwall Show for some 58 years, and our contribution to helping with the smooth running of this massive county show just keeps getting bigger.
This year, 199 of our girls from all over Cornwall congregated in the Messenger Service tent to help over the three days. Our core service to help the Show Secretary's Office, actively helping them to document all of the fantastic and very different class results as well as physically collecting the results from all over the showground. We also run the well- used Flower Crèche in the popular Flower Tent which allows visitors to buy plants and flowers and leave them in a cool place so they can enjoy the rest of the show before popping back to fetch them on their way home, plus running the Catering Service within the tent, keeping all of the exhibitors fed and watered. Moving away from plants, we also help run the Child Crèche which on very sunny days is bursting with families looking for a bit of shade and quiet away from the busy thoroughfares.
In addition to assisting people to find their seats in the main ring grandstand, this year we were also asked by the organisers to provide girls as part of their new Show Hosts team at the main gates. This enabled some of our older girls to help people get their bearings as they arrived in the showground and also gave us very valuable awareness with the general public and the chance to really showcase our friendly and helpful approach to helping others.
Girlguiding Cornwall members were delighted to be introduced to HRH Princess Alexandra on her visit to the show on the Friday. She stopped and talked to each girl and adult leader asking questions about the flower creche and how long we have been in guiding and was very surprised to learn we had been running the Messenger Service for the 58 years.
All in all, everyone had a brilliant day! Bring on next year!
